UMV Local Foods Project is a novel solution to a growing problem of providing high quality, guaranteed safe, approved source, locally grown vegetables at an affordable price that doesn't require each farmer to build his own on-farm processing center; and it meets state and federal requirements with value-added capabilities. The project idea originated in Iowa as the result of a need for "brick and mortar" logistical solutions for farmers needing processing, cold storage, and distribution for their local meat and vegetable products. Much of the knowledge and foundation was gained from work carried out by the ISU Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, PFI, and ISU Extension. We are proud also to be working with the SD Department of Agriculture on several aspects of equipment funding and collaboration with Red Earth Coop on a strong retail presence. This allows us to focus on processing and distribution and working with farmers.
